Keynote Speakers
John Read is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He previously taught applied linguistics, TESOL and EAP at Victoria University of Wellington, the SEAMEO Regional Language Centre in Singapore, the University of Texas El Paso, and Indiana University. He specializes in language testing and assessment, including vocabulary assessment and the testing of English for academic and professional purposes. His major publications are Assessing Vocabulary (Cambridge, 2000), Assessing English Proficiency for University Study (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015) and Post-admission Language Assessment of University Students (edited) (Springer, 2016). Earlier in his career he was extensively involved with the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as a test administrator, consultant, and principal investigator for three IELTS-funded research projects. More recently, he was a member of the Committee of Examiners for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for a four-year term (2011-15). At the University of Auckland, he has been Academic Coordinator of the Diagnostic English Language Needs Assessment (DELNA), which is administered to all students entering the university. He has served his profession in various capacities. He was co-editor of the journal Language Testing from 2002 to 2006. He has a long history of service to the International Language Testing Association (ILTA), culminating in his election as Vice-President (2009-10) and then President (2011-12) of the Association. He was Chair of the Language Testing Research Colloquium, the prestigious annual conference of ILTA, when it was held in Auckland in July 2018.
Gary Ockey is a professor of applied linguistics and technology at Iowa State University. He investigates second language assessments, with a focus on the use of technology and quantitative methods to facilitate measurement of oral communication. He is a coauthor of “Assessing L2 listening: Moving towards authenticity”, John Benjamins, 2018 and has a contract with Springer for a co-edited book, “Another generation of fundamental considerations in language testing: A festschrift in honor of Lyle Bachman”. He has published in various journals, including Applied Linguistics, Language Learning, Language Assessment Quarterly, Language Testing, and Modern Language Journal. He has served as the Editor of the TOEFL Research Report Series, and is currently an editor of Language Assessment Quarterly.
